I'm having this problem same intermittent freezing problem on my Lenovo Flex 3-1570 with a Synaptics touchpad running Windows 10 Pro upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro Update.

[ Update: Just to narrow the scope of potential causes, I did not experience this problem when I was running Windows 8.1 Pro Update. It only began after I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. I first experienced it within my first few minutes of running Windows 10 (i.e. before I had a chance to install or update any software or change any system settings). Additionally, the computer is only one and a half months old so it is unlikely to be a problem with aging/failing hardware. ]

When a freeze occurs, the mouse cursor typically freezes for somewhere between 3 and 5 seconds. I have not discovered any guaranteed repro steps nor any set of actions that seem to reliably occasionally trigger the freeze. As a software dev, my best guess for where to start looking for the problem would be any synchronous code that could trigger a brief resource contention.

From subjective experience, the freeze usually lasts 5 or more seconds if I try to move the cursor using the touchpad approximately once a second after the freeze begins (after two or three tries at once a second I then wait 2-3 seconds and when I then try again the problem has always cleared up to the best of my recollection). If I instead wait approximately three seconds after the freeze begins before I try to move the cursor using the touchpad again, to the best of my recollection it always works on that first try.

Keyboard input continues to work during a freeze. The one time I thought to test it, several sequential cycles of using the keyboard for approximately one second then trying to use the touchpad to move the cursor extended the freeze to approximately 7 seconds before I stopped cycling like that, at which point I waited 2-3 seconds and then was able to move the cursor with the touchpad.

I have not thought to try touch screen input during a freeze and cannot do so now since I cannot reliably trigger a freeze.

[ Update: I was able to try touch screen input during a subsequent freeze (still no reliable repro). The result was unexpected. When the touchpad was frozen I used a single touch on the touch screen and it was treated as though I had performed a pinch gesture on the touch screen. I have found no combination of touchpad use and a single touch on the touch screen that results in a pinch gesture input when the touchpad is not frozen. ]

Sometimes many minutes, possibly an hour or more (I haven't taken detailed notes) pass between freezes while other times less than a minute will pass between the end of one freeze and the beginning of another.

E6400

In Device Manager the touchpad device is identified as 'Lenovo Pointing Device' with the driver provider listed as 'Synaptics', the driver version given as '19.0.9.5', driver date '5/29/2015', and digital signer 'Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher'.

The 'Update Driver...' button is not grayed out so I'm going to try that now. If it finds a new driver I will post the new version, etc., and whether or not it seems to have fixed the problem.

[ Update: I had Windows search the web for an updated driver and it reported that there was no new driver available. ]
